Tell Me Something Tuesday: Required Reading! First Chapter, First Paragraph, Tuesday Intros!4/9/2018
Today is the first full day I'm going to be away from my daughter in 4 years!! I'm trying to distract myself with a ton of work so wish me luck lol As always, we'll start with Tell Me Something Tuesday! Tell Me Something Tuesday which is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where a wide range of topics are discussed from books to blogging. This week's topic is 'What were some of your favourite required reading books in school?' I was (obviously) the kid who absolutely loved reading at school, I was also the girl who took extra books to read once I'd finish the class work. Some of my favourite required reading in school included; Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men, Great Expectations and Educating Rita. My favourites in college included; The Colour Purple and A Midsummer Night's Dream. My least favourite has to be The Scarlet Letter which was one of the most boring things I've ever read! I loved English in school and in college. My biggest regret is not continuing to study English at university, I probably would have stuck it out if I had!! How about you? What was your favourite required reading? Up next is the First Chapter, First Paragraph - Tuesday Intros meme. This is a weekly blog meme hosted by Vicki, from I’d Rather Be At The Beach and the idea is to post the first paragraph (or two) of the first chapter of a book you are currently reading or that you want to read. This week I've decided to feature a book I'm hoping to read soon, 'DJ Dangerfield' by Anyta Sunday. Here's the first two paragraphs: "I don't even know why I keep ringing in. It inevitably ends up with me wanting to...I don't know, punch a puppy and chuck my radio out into the night or something." I looked up from where I was lying on my roommate's bedroom floor. The tassels on the old brown-and-red-patched lampshade twisted gently in the cold Dunedin wind that tunneled through the half-open window. The phone was warm against my ear though, and every time his voice came down the line, it got warmer. What do you think? Would you keep reading?
Don't forget to leave your thoughts and links in the comments below. HOW IS IT SEPTEMBER ALREADY!?!?! 😱😱😱 So, I'm freaking out a little because I have a ton of deadlines coming up this year with work and then Christmas is on the horizon and I feel a bit like time is flying and just dragging me along for a ride that I'm just not ready for! Anyway, onto something a little more positive, here's my August 2018 book roundup. I started 9 books this month and finished 7, as I'm still reading two. Here's a closer look at the books I read in August (just click on the title to head over to the review): Admiring Ash by Anyta Sunday - This was a really sweet read from one of my favourite romance authors. It's the start of a new series and I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the characters. #Jerk by Kat T. Masen - This book was my first 'below 3 star' review. It held a lot of problems for me and so, if you do click on the link, be prepared for a very spoiler heavy review. Boy Toy by Sarina Bowen and Tanya Eby - I LOVED THIS BOOK! It broke me out of a bit of a reading slump after a few books that I didn't particularly enjoy, and I'm looking forward to discovering more from these two authors. To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin (Xpresso Blog Tours eARC) - This was easily my favourite book of the month! I loved every single thing about this body positive book and I'm desperate for more from this author. Dark Desires by Eve Silver - I really enjoyed this book, a lot more than I expected it to. It was a fantastic, Gothic romance with lots of mystery, suspense and sizzling chemistry. It was like a mixture between Downton Abbey and Whitechapel and I would highly recommend it! The Soul Keepers by Devon Taylor (Xpresso Blog Tours eARC) - This book took me by surprise in a great way. I loved the mixture of Greek mythology and pirates! Kiss the Girl by Tara Sivec (NetGalley eARC) - I loved the final instalment of this modern-day fairytale retelling. In typical Sivec style, this book was lots of fun, featuring a strong heroine, powerful friendships and a guaranteed HEA. I only bought one book this month: Mirage by Somaiya Daud - this was a very impulsive buy because it looks so pretty and I just couldn't leave it!! As is becoming tradition, I have absolutely no idea what eBooks I bought this month.
Have you read any of these? What do you think? I hope you've enjoyed my August 2018 book roundup! I have my fingers crossed for an even better month of reading next month! Rating: 4 STARS Genre: Romantic Comedy Standalone/Series: The Naughty Princess Club #3 How I got this book: ARC from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley A struggling antiques collector finds herself falling in love with a millionaire playboy; but can she ever be a part of his world? Meet the Naughty Princess Club, a series from USA Today bestselling author Tara Sivec that brings readers to Fairytale Lane and the hilarity—and romance—that three women fall into once they decide to strut their stuff and bring on their own happily ever after. While her friends have broken free of their insecurities, Ariel Waters is struggling to come out of her shell. Her ex-husband took away her voice and her self-confidence, and Ariel is drowning under a sea of debt to afford the alimony she has to pay him. She refuses to ever fall for a man’s charms again, and is determined to make her own way. When her house and her beloved antiques are taken by the bank after too many missed payments, Ariel finds herself adrift until the infuriatingly charming Eric Sailor comes to her rescue. Although she can’t stand the millionaire playboy, Eric’s kindness and unconditional support reveal hidden depths and a love that Ariel never imagined she could find. But there are outside influences who will stop at nothing to keep them apart; can Ariel and Eric weather the storm and find a way to be together? First of all, just a quick note: This book can be read as a standalone but I really wouldn't recommend it. There's so much in this book that has been steadily built throughout the series that I'd highly recommend reading both At the Stroke of Midnight and In Bed with the Beast first.
This series of modern-day fairy tale re-tellings has been fantastic throughout with hysterical laughs, sweet, tender emotion, sizzling chemistry and 3 strong, powerful women who aren't willing to give up even when they're at rock bottom. I adored books 1 and 2 in this series, and Kiss the Girl was a great finale, even if it wasn't my favourite book of the series. As you can probably gather, this book is about Ariel and is a Little Mermaid re-telling (with a twist). Ariel is the loudest, most-opinionated and mouthy woman of the trio, but even she has struggles and insecurities that she keeps hidden behind her personality. In this book it's nice to see the other side of Ariel, the side she keeps hidden from everyone but Eric. There were plenty of sweet moments between these two characters and a lot of sexual chemistry. I loved the build-up, and how their relationship evolved over the course of the book. Kiss the Girl promises plenty of fun, and even though it's at times a little cheesy, it's a romantic read with a really positive feminist message running throughout. If you're looking for a very unconventional princess with a loud mouth and a blazing personality, a handsome prince, an evil b**** (oh, I meant witch!), strong friendships, several fish and even a hairless cat named Derek, this is the book for you! |
