Hello book lovers! How did April treat you? Instead of the usual Sunday book tag, today I'm wrapping up the books I read in April. Like March, April was another great reading month for me. I read four books in total, a mixture of YA and Adult Fantasy, with one contemporary YA. It was great to get back to the Grishaverse with Shadow & Bone, and I loved watching the Netflix adaptation! I'm really hoping to read a few more books in May as I've got a few Arc's to get through as well as some new releases I'm really excited for. Lore by Alexandra Bracken - Lore was the 7th Turn The Page book club selection and it was fantastic. I hadn't expected much from this book if I'm honest, and I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The contemporary Greek mythology take was fantastic, and the twists and treachery kept the plot moving quickly. Overall, it was a fantastic fantasy. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo - This book was a bit of a let down. Compared to Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, the characters just didn't do it for me. I didn't really feel a connection to Alina, she just felt a bit petulant and boring, where Mal was arrogant and obsessive. The Darkling and Genya were my two favourite characters, and I just wanted more from them! But, saying that, I thought the world-building and magic system were fantastic, and I'm hoping for more character development in the next book. How It All Blew Up by Arvin Ahmadi - How It All Blew Up is a great coming out story. It's a fun romp through Rome, with a diverse cast of characters and found-family, interspersed with really poignant interrogation scenes and a narrator who's instantly likeable. The Unbroken by C.L. Clark - This book is a difficult one to review. The pace is really mixed, with a lot of slow-paced description and world-building interspersed with random bouts of action and tension. I loved the inherent queerness and gender-bending characters, but I did struggle with the love-story which felt rushed in places, in direct contrast to the story which felt a bit dragged out. It was an interesting read, but I'm not sure I'll be reading the next one. Aaaand, that's it for my April wrap-up! Have you read any of these books?
Don't forget to let me know what you've read lately in the comments below! Happy Reading! Comments are closed.
