Happy New Year! I hope 2023 is treating you well so far and that you're already reading some great books! I can't really believe that I'm already on my 3rd book of the year, with my last book being my first 5-star read of 2023! Keep reading for an update on my favourite books of 2022, what I'm reading now, and what's to come for My Endless Shelf and the Turn the Page podcast in 2023. First of all, if you've been here a while, you might have noticed that the blog has been pretty dormant lately - I think the last post, and podcast, was back in October.
The truth is, I've been struggling with balance a lot lately. Trying to juggle running a business, home schooling, podcasting, blogging, reading, and working on my writing has proven too much for me to handle. Out of the things above, there are some I obviously can't get rid of, and since I spent a large portion of 2022 in a huge reading slump, it only made sense to pause the blog and podcast. My writing also had to take a back seat. Now, as I enter 2023, my work-life doesn't look like it's going to settle anytime soon and neither does my personal life, so for now at least, there won't be regular blog and podcast updates. That's not to say I won't ever put out a post (like this one) or do a random podcast episode or author interview over on YouTube. I'll see what I have the energy and capacity for as it comes, it just means that there won't be a set schedule of stuff to come. The blog, podcast episodes and video interviews will, of course, stay live for anyone who wants to access them. For now, I'm just focusing on enjoying reading the books I actually want to read. I got so bogged down last year with reading the books I thought I had to read, even if I wasn't enjoying them, that I stopped being excited about reading altogether and took a huge break where I read absolutely nothing. Now, I'm loving using the Bookly app to track my reading and to build a daily reading habit, and I'm finding it so much more enjoyable to share my book reviews and updates on my Instagram and Twitter channels instead. So, do come and check those out as I'm much more active there! Saying all of this, I did read some amazing books last year, so here are my top 5 reads of 2022:
These books were highlights in what was otherwise a pretty crappy reading year. This year, I'm really hoping things are starting to look up. I broke my slump at the start of the year with a re-read of A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. I'm aiming to read as many of the completed series sitting on my shelves as possible this year, starting with this one as I never got around to reading A Court of Silver Flames. My second book of the year was Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree - this book completely took me surprise with how much I loved it. I was drawn into the world Travis has created and never wanted to leave. This book was an exceptional 5-star read that I know I'll want to read again and again and again. Right now, I've just started an ARC of Out of Character by Jenna Miller which is a contemporary novel about Cass, a queer, fat girl who loves online role-play storytelling. I'm only a chapter in but already enjoying, and relating to Cass on multiple levels, so fingers crossed as I have high hopes! That's all from me for now, I hope you're having a great reading year so far!
